Fall is here, temperatures are steadily dropping, and the spirit of holidays is ready to take over. Whether you celebrate Halloween, Rosh Hashanah, Sukko, Thanksgiving, autumn magic is the common denominator here. That, and food! Squash, cinnamon, pumpkins, pomegranates, apples, the list goes on with the specific flavors of this special season. It’s high time you consider enjoying some fall activities with your kids, so read on to discover or rediscover ideas and tips for some seasonal family fun, from outings to visits to crafts to cooking… there will be something for everyone!

All the fall activities I propose are to be chosen depending on the places you live and the age of the kids you are with. Of course, your culture, your views on life, your parenting style, your personal interests and the ones of your children are also to be taken into account when planning an activity for everybody’s delight! Let’s dig in!

1- Apple Picking

Let’s start off with this perennial classic!

  • Make some apple cider, apple pie, apple sauce or any other fun fall recipes with apples.
  • Have a apple cider “tea” party.
  • Decorate brown bags and fill them up with apples or pears you found in the orchard to give
them to family members, neighbors, teachers, friends etc…

Fall is the season for apple picking and there are plenty of pick-your-own orchards. But did you
know it is also the season for pear picking and grape harvest? Make sure to find organic grown
farms and orchards before you are planning your outings. If not, make sure you wash your
produce thoroughly and take off the skin.

Going apple picking is a kids favorite!

2- Go for a walk to pick up leaves, twigs and seeds

If a good walk is always a great activity (bring some warm clothes though and watch the weather forecast beforehand…), the real fun activities start once you’ll be back home. There’s plenty to do with just a few twigs and leaves!

Take a stroll in a nice forest to pick up craft materials!

3- Go in a pick-your-own pumpkin patch

  • Carve and/or decorate pumpkins.
  • Make a carving contest with friends at home.
  • Roast pumpkin seeds.

4- Go for a full weekend adventure

  • Pack some home made healthy food, gather some warm cozy sweaters, good books and
family games and go spend the weekend in a cabin. In some campground, you can rent
either a cabin or even a motorhome. Or spend a weekend in a nice Airbnb.
  • Go on a road trip to see fall foliage areas. Some states have great forests and small towns as
    well as scenic foliage drives.
  • Visit a national park or state park and bring your own bird

5- Have fun in the kitchen

  • Make healthy meals and deserts with seasonal vegetables and fruits.
  • Roast pumpkin seeds from your carved pumpkin.
  • Bake healthy cookies and share them with your neighbors.
  • Find a good and easy bread recipe and go for it!
  • Make a healthy Halloween gingerbread house.

6- Go to a farmer’s market

  • Pick some local organic vegetables and make a soup.
  • Get some apples and make a pie.
  • Buy some gourds to decorate your home; make a center piece with them.

7- Take a car ride

  • Dress your kids in pajamas, pack some sweaters and other warm clothing, bring some warm
tea, healthy snacks, take ride away from the city light and have a stargazing evening.
  • Take a ride in the evening to see Halloween themed neighborhoods, look for decorated
    homes.
  • Take a haunted drive-through.

  • Have a treasure hunt at home, or in the backyard and invite neighborhood kids over.
  • Attend a costume contest or have one at home.
  • Create a gratitude tree for your dining room and fill each leaf with something you feel grateful
for. Check out how to make one here!
  • Check all the local fall events, in libraries, parks, museums etc…
