February 14th is just around the corner, and you probably already have plans with your partner. And your kids are also probably ready to give their traditional Valentine card to their classmates at school, accompanied by chocolate, candies, or any other sort of sugary treat. But what if we can come up with a healthier and better idea to this school tradition?
A loving Valentine’s day tradition revisited
If you want to avoid the sugar crush and other nasty ingredients in the treats your kids will give their classmates on Valentine’s day, try to slip one of these fun thing in the envelope of their cards!
A SPROUT PENCIL: what a lovely idea! Instead of just recycling their pencils after using them, kids can plant this one in a pot, and it will grow into a plant. Way to make Valentine’s love grow!

MY TIPS
- If you enclose one of these Valentine gift, write a little explanative note for the kids receiving the cards so they know what to do with them!
- Of course, you can get creative with the card itself! Get 45 easy DIY Valentine’s day cards ideas on goodhousekeeping.com.
If you are feeling adventurous and like to create an original gift with your kids, try this amazing recipe I recently found to make your very own birdseed ornaments. It’s a good way to hear birds chirping their love songs and makes for a perfect Valentine gift!
MY TIPS
- Instead of using plastic straws to make the hole in the ornament, use a wooden stick!
- You don’t have any heart-shaped cooky-cutters or molds at home? Try this lovely heart-shape silicone mold (affiliate link), and use it for your ornament, and more (soaps, bath bombs, muffins…)
- Instead of buying special bags in stores that will eventually end up in the trash, use paper bags to make nice gift pouches. All you need is a pair of cissors, a ruler and some crayons, some tape maybe, and let your kids be creative decorating it!

Valentine’s day activities for all
If you want to have more fun with your kids and celebrate the holiday with them, you can certainly find activities in your area during the week and even the weekend prior to Valentine’s day. Places like museums, art studios, festivals, and libraries often offer special Valentine activities for kids. Some stores can have special arts and crafts making for kids too. Be curious, check those places near you to build some sweet memories with your little ones.
And if your kids stay home comes evening on Valentine’s day and you can’t celebrate out this year, check out my last post on how to have a memorable Valentine’s date night at home! After all, parents must take care of their lovers too…
Happy Valentine’s day!
