Most families are going on spring break in the mountains to enjoy the last snows (check out what you can do in ski resorts in WINTER OUTDOOR FAMILY FUN!), or are opting for more exotic resorts. They usually fly there and spend the whole time at the same location to make the best of their stay and have fun. But what if you tried to plan a road trip instead for a change this coming spring break? I’ve selected the 10 most obvious reasons why you should do so… Ready? Set? Read on!

My 10 reasons to go on a road trip this spring break

  1. You will avoid the stress of big crowds at airports, that’s an easy one!
  2. You will save money on plane tickets. Remember, the more kids you have, the more tickets to spend your hard earned money on… So big families will save big money on road trips. Leaving from home will also make you save money on car rentals.
  3. You will travel safer health-wise. In these troubled times you might as well avoid flying and being close to hundreds of people in airports and airplanes, as it means higher chances to get colds, flus or other sickness.
  4. You can leave anytime, without the stress of having a set schedule.
GOOD TO KNOW: Leaving when it is still dark outside while your kids are still in their pjs can save time while enabling your kids to sleep more while driving. If you do so, keep quiet and move them to their carseats slowly, with dimmed lights and soft music in the car. It’s an amazing experience for a kid!
  5. Your will enjoy great family bonding. Indeed, road trips definitely bring family members closer, as you will all be spending time in a car chatting, having fun, playing games, laughing…
  6. You can pack whatever you need without having to be strict with weights and luggages, unlike on plane trips. Your kids can bring toys along and fun activities for the ride, and you can pack any extra thing you’ll want in the car. And did I mention pets?
  7. You will be able to bring food and any special food that your family likes. You can prepare homemade meals for the first few days, making for a healthier choice than when flying and going to restaurants. It is a great way to save money on food while eating less in restaurants. What I usually do myself when I travel, is that I cook in advance and bring along, I then stop at farmer’s market to buy fruits and vegetables I can eat raw, and I go to grocery stores along the way. I’m trying my best to plan health food store stops during my trip.
  8. You will find more flexibility with traveling. You can change itinerary, stay at a place longer, skip a visit,
sleep in some mornings, depending on your kids and the general mood!
  9. Road trips can be very educational… There are always museums or other such activities for kids or families. I highly recommend to plan in advance if you want to get some education going! Kids won’t forget it!
  10. You will discover new places! A road trip can lead you anywhere, and you will definitely see places, sceneries or activities you couldn’t have discovered while traveling by plane…

Good to know

Although it is fun to just go in an adventure and feel free, it is better to have some kind of plan, especially when you have kids.

Traveling need regular stops for stretching and going to the bathroom. If you have no bathroom around because your next stop is a few miles away and kids cannot hold, getting a travel potty is a good option to consider.
Try this one from Oxo Tot that is both portable and locks on toilets: https://amzn.to/3SG9sZy (affiliate link).
Use some potty liners with it: https://amzn.to/3xYau9w (affiliate link). These are nature kind potty liners from Poppy Potty, they are BPA free and biodegradable. You can bring them on any of your outdoor adventures, as they can be used for more than potty duties!

So when planned in advance, a road trip can have different stops every few hours for visiting a fun place or doing a nice activity. It is not only the destination that matters but the trip itself! So making a road trip by stopping at different well-planned locations on the road, can make the journey way funnier. You will certainly hear less “are we there yet?” coming from the rear seats for hours and hours!

If you travel with toddlers, you must plan the visits around your kid’s nap times. Take is slow, you don’t want to tire your kids too much and get them exhausted. We all know what happens with tired children, don’t we?

Ain’t nothing like a great road trip to create unforgettable memories with your kids!

The advantages of day road trips during spring break

If you don’t have time, if you are on a tight budget, or if you have obligations on some days, why don’t you opt for day road trips this spring break? They are convenient for more than one reason!

  • You can come back and be in your bed at night… comfy!
  • You just bring food for one day, and can prepare at night in your kitchen for another day trip if you want.
  • You can have a one day trip, then stay at home the next day to prepare another one later on that week.
  • You are definitely going to save big money on overnight stays in hotels and other accomodations.
  • If the weather is changing and not good, or if someone does not feel well, you can skip activities or even the whole day and leave on the following morning!

So, whether for a day or longer, planning a road trip has nothing but great advantages to create lifetime memories this spring break with your kids. All you have to do now, is plan ahead!
